State Pension - change of personal details

My neighbour rang the DWP to tell them of a change in personal contact details for her state pension. After spending 20 minutes on hold she was told to go online to do so. She uses the internet but in a limited way and is baffled by the choices available. She expected to have an option to change her details.

I looked up the state pension on the DWP site and I'm equally baffled. I can usually do anything I need to do online. It's usually the technical stuff that baffles me. When I follow the leads for changing details it just leads me to entering her post code for contacting the local pension service either by phone or an email form. Not a place where she can change her details.

Is it possible to change the details on the DWP basic state pension site and if it is where does she do it. When I failed to find the right place I thought there may have been a help guide for new visitors to the site but I couldn't find one. Can anyone help me with this.

when you say you looked on the DWP website, what was the URL you used?
Is your neighbour already receiving the state pension?
What personal details does your neighbour want to update?

Have you looked at this page?

That's for HMRC - although they'll also need to be notified of change of address, it's not what the OP's looking for at the moment.

OP, like you, I've had a look and I can't find anyway to notify the Pension service of a change of address online - in fact, the gov.uk site just provides a contact phone number, or a look-up facility to find the appropriate address to write to depending on your location.

    https://www.gov.uk/contact-pension-service

(If she decides to write, she mustn't forget to include her NI number).
  • Yes, it can't be done online, you need to phone or write them a letter (to the correct address for your pension section). I recently helped my father change the bank account that his SP was paid to (I wrote a letter for him).

Does the DWP have more than one phone number? Maybe she phoned the wrong one? If she's already getting her pension the number is 0800 731 0469 as stated above. If she is too young to be getting it yet, the number for the Future Pension Centre is 0800 731 0175

tell-hrmc was the page I referred to where you entered your post code to find contact numbers or send a webmail but you could not actually change your address or telephone number there. That is what she was told to do. She has been in receipt of the state pension since she reached 60 but has never been on the DWP website.

This is the URL I used https://www.gov.uk/browse/working/state-pension

It appears you can't actually change any personal details online you can only send a webmail or get a teleohone number. Is the system not secure when you are unable to change your address online. I suppose bank details csn't be changed either.

She is adamant that she was told she needed to go on the DWP website to change her address. That is not possible so perhaps she misunderstood. Are people on benefits able to change details. I thought everything relating to benefits was dealt with online now.

Is there only one telephone number for those in receipt of their pension. I thought their would be numerous ones as you have to enter your post code in the HMRC change of details page below. https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-of-details

Now this page suggests that you can update your address here after you register on the Gateway. No mention of telephone number though. This is a mess. It should be very clear how pensioners change or update details.

    https://www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-address

Update your address with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if you pay Income Tax through PAYE and live in the UK.
    This updates your address for:
    • Income Tax
    • National Insurance
    • State Pension
    • tax credits and Child Benefit
    To sign in you need:
    • a Government Gateway user ID and password - if you don’t have a user ID you can create one when you update your address
    • a National Insurance number (a temporary reference number will not work)

HMRC deal with income tax, child benefit, they have the option to change details on line,

DWP is Pension Service and she needs to call DWP on 0800 731 0469
