Barclays have let me take out too much money!

Have a slight problem, was paid on the 31st, and using my Electron card, i normally can't go over my overdraft limit.

Went shopping on Tuesday, took money out of the hole in the wall and used my Electron at the tills, which is all ok, except that Barclays have let me take out about £200 over my overdraft, and now am slightly worried by the amount of charges i'm gonna incur and that they might ask for it all back in one big go!

I know i should have checked my balance when taking out the cash, but as above, my Electron normally stops me going over the OD, so if i'm up to my limit I can't withdraw the cash!

I need some advice, can the bank demand it all bank in one go, should i call them to sort the mess out (increase my OD if they'll let me) or should i just ignore it and not worry about it as my next wages would swallow the £200.00?

I'd think it would be worth a call, depending on who your bank is, as they might agree to waive any charges if you normally manage your account well.

Possibly unlikely (check out OP's signature).

Exactly. Paid on the 31st - overdrawn by £200 just over a week later. Blames the Bank for allowing that to happen - yet emblazons this as part of her signature :-

Call the bank and explain the situation. Barclays are usually pretty good if you are upfront with them.

It's very easy for others to critisize the OP, but we all manage our money in different ways. Some micro manage down to the last penny, others simply use what they think are safeguards to control their spending, drawing. We are all different, but just because we do it differently to others, it doesn't mean that one person is wrong.

I can't find what the point in posting this is.......

maybe...... er no. I don't think there is a hidden message, just an ego boost for the poster responsible.

However to give the benefit of the doubt I am prepared to accept that.........

.....er, no hang on a minute, it is just a slight on the OP, there is no other point in posting this.

Well Mikeyorks, I hope you achieve a higher plane by simply posting to critisize others, and maybe your life will be better for having got that off your chest. I certainly hope so, because posting such crap usually speaks volumes about the person that writes it, rather than the person it is aimed at.

However, in the spirit of being nice to other moneysavers, and following in your footsteps, I will give you the benefit of the doubt - once I can find it.

HugoSP, your post is typical of the "other side" of post for people who have got themselves in a spot of trouble, i.e. "it's not you fault that you manage your money in a way that "allows" a bank to let you get in trouble"
MikeYorks posting are sometimes sharp but always helpful as in "take responsibility for your own actions".

Have you used everything you bought? If you haven't I'd recommend taking it back and getting a refund (onto your Electron). That way you credit your account, and don't spend money on extra stuff you may not actually need.

Interesting as I am not in debt, and I apprecate the responsibility of managing my money. I am a great believer in ultimate responsibility, I never said or claimed that the OP was not responsible. I can however understand how the situation could have arisen. People choose to manage their money in different ways, and the way which she thought would work didn't.

No, my rant was about the ever increasing posts, of which the above was a fine example, in which I could find NOTHING to help the OP. The poster in question obviously has a bit of a fan club who appreciate his blunt and to the point approach (quite appropriate at times) but the post didn't actually contain any useful information. Indeed it was written in a demeaning way specifically aimed at the OP. I saw no point in that - lifes too short.

My post in response was to point out that there is more than one view given a situation, and to help the OP with some genuine advice.

Anyway you've made your point and I have made mine. I suggest we let it rest now. If there is one thing that comes out of this, I would wish it that when people had drafted something to ask the following questions.

    1) Is this post helpful to the OP or anyone else that may read it?
    2) Is it demeaning or patronising to anyone, or could it be taken as such, and if so it this justified?
    3) What am I trying to achieve by posting this ie, helping the common man or my ego?
