Question on a default placed on my account

Hi,
Wondering if someone can shed some light!
Have an issue with Virgin media placing a default on my account, which I was unaware of.
I applied for a mortgage recently and found out I have a low credit score. I looked into this and found out the above.
Upon leaving Virgin when I moved last year, (they didn't offer services in my new building) I thought everything had been sorted - I was aware that I was issued a refund but figured that was the end. Turns out that there was still £12 to pay. The last bill was sent to my previous address and I didn't receive it - despite giving my new address. Nor did I ever received the cheque for the refund I was owed.
I called them to pay the £12 a couple of days ago and was told that due to the issues with the address that I could contact the credit file amendment team to request that the default be removed, which I have done.
I had paid every monthly fee before then and actually had funds in my account for a deposit on a house, so really no issues in paying this had I been aware.
In addition, I work in the financial services industry and cannot have a default against me - I will lose my job. This is on top of not being able to get a mortgage. I am a single mother to a 2 years old and work full time. I've never had a late payment on anything. I also receive no benefits whatsoever - everything is reliant on my career.
Can anyone shed some light on my options or if you've been through the same thing and had a default removed?
Thanks!

What did the credit file amendment team say?
If they remove it, that will sort it out.0 -
You won’t lose a job over a utilities default.
A CCJ maybe but not a default.0
