Enforcement Notice: LL Did Not Have Planning Permission

I have been paying council tax, yes. That's a very good point.
As for trying to get out of rent, well, if the law were to say that the contract is illegal, why on earth not? I think Martin Lewis has quite a lot to say about giving money to scam artists.
Anyway, I shall speak to the landlord in the week and see what he proposes as the way forward. Then, I'll take all the information to citizens advice. Thank you for the input from people not looking for an argument (which this board is shocking for).0 -
This is one of the annoying quirks of renting ... you've done nothing wrong and you're going to have to spend £1000k of "lost money" in new sets of fees, moving costs and "overlap of rental" time... sooooo annoying. That can wipe out your entire disposable income for an entire year!
And, on top of that, you'll have to find the new deposit before you get this one back - and a month's rent up front "from nowhere".
No advice, but "I understand" .... whereas others just say "move". You're the one who will be seriously out of pocket ... and if you keep getting moved then you might as well "give up" working as there seems no bl00dy point if it's all going to be spent on "wasted" fees and overlaps.

England has finally caught up with Scotland and letting agency fees for tenants will be banned from 1st June.

Ideally I'd like to withhold rent to enable me to save for moving and for the sheer inconvenience of it all, but I suppose our contract still stands, regardless.
The sheer inconvenience of receiving a letter?0 -
It doesn't.Power_Kitten wrote: »if the law were to say that the contract is illegal0 -

You are absolutely right. Opening a letter is literally the only consequence for me in this situation. I'll just put my feet up and not worry about finding another suitable and affordable place to live, and all the costs involved, which are still substantial even without the letting fees that are thankfully being abolished.
I'm out. Have a lovely day antagonising stressed people you don't know on the Internet.0 -
Council Tax is due on a property used for residential purposes, the legality of that use is not an issue that is considered.
As a tax law council tax legislation lets little escape.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

That's good, but there is still going to be a cost in money/time to moving.0
