Sewage survey after mortgage offer???

Hi,
We are in the process of selling. Our buyers have had many problems getting a mortgage approved but 6 months after they made us an offer on the property they finally have an offer.
The property was surveyed about 2 months ago, the solicitors have received what they need and were only waiting for one document from the lender (Tesco) to confirm the buyers have a gifted deposit, and this was to be posted out yesterday . We were told maybe exchange on Friday next week. The buyer has now advised me that Tesco have today told them that they now require a further survey with regards to sewer pipes at the rear of the property. Is this not unusual at this stage. Typically it’s friday night and the solicitors are closed. We had to move out of the property and are in a really difficult position. I’m panicking now that this is highly unusual? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Well, I suspect they're lying one way or another - either Tesco hadn't actually given them the mortgage offer, or the requirement for this further survey isn't from Tesco. Mortgage lenders aren't in the habit of lending first and asking questions later.
However, you say "at this stage" - the stage you're at is "haven't exchanged yet", and no, surveys of all types are not unusual at that stage

Hi, thanks for the reply. Our solicitors have discussed the offer and I’m happy it’s there... it’s the last minute lender decision that concerns me and why so late when the decision has been made.0

Even though I was buying without need of a mortgage, my solicitor had a survey made, and that too was very near to dates of exchange and completion. That was in 2002, and the report is still i my files and runs to 5 pages and diagrammatic map.0
