There are actually 34 cabin windows (18L, 16R) plus 4 in the cockpit. I wonder if they have just looked at the left hand side and assumed the other side is the same, and are expecting 36 as the answer?

The picture shows the RH side with 16 windows. So maybe they have assumed 16 each side plus 4 in the cockpit also giving an answer of 36.

That would rule out One-Eye's suggestion but mine would still be valid.
However, I have noted from studying many images, that BMI usually have the front window on the LH side blocked off on the inside. So if they had assumed 18 on each side less one blocked off plus 4 for the cockpit, you would get the 39 suggested in the OP.
Either way it is being assumed that they are making an incorrect assumption.
The correct answer would seem to be either 37 or 38 if they include the blocked off one UNLESS someone can find another 1 or 2 that aren't visible.

ETA: The above does not include small door windows which the Twitter conversation suggests should be added. This would mean that the answer they want is 39.
    If there is 1 door window 16 + 18 + 4 + 1 (most likely)
    Or 2 door windows? 16 + 17 + 4 + 2
