    According to wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintage_clothing

"Vintage clothing is a generic term for garments originating from a previous era..........

Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is considered vintage"

To be honest, I can't remember now, it was over 30 years ago, I think you are right and it depends who you are talking to about vintage items in the first place. And I'm not a business seller like you, so not as well placed to know.

Given that eBay sellers use vintage new as a description for a lot of what they sell I do tend to mentally block out the vintage tag

Vintage is a well over used term I agree, especially on selling sites like eBay or etsy where something can be both brand new and vintage at the same time. Personally I am extremely careful when I use the term and always put a suggested time frame as well in my description , so 'vintage 1970s clip on plastic earrings' for instance. For me it is the various groups that sometimes catch me out, I am always having to check when selling or asking questions whether group A consider say 1980 vintage or if I will get a warning from admin, whilst others don't allow anything post 1980 - it is a minefield!

Personally I use 80's as latest for 'vintage' label, that's at least 30 years old if it was from 1989. I'm a bit on the fence about 80's though and not 100% happy with calling it vintage.

I'm happy to label anything prior to the 80's (40 years old or more) as vintage seeing as antique is 'only' 100 years old.
  • I've seen 90s stuff listed as 'vintage' but I find that hard to reconcile, mentally. I'd say anything 25-30 years old would be vintage - things that would have been chosen by teens/young adults when I was a child.
  • This reminds me of something not clothes though.

I saw a plate on a car boot sale, I picked it up and the stall holder said ' That's an antique ' I turned it over and on the back it said Microwave Proof.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

I'm on the far side of fifty and anything I remember from childhood I'll accept as vintage. With my teeth clenched, but hey. Soolin's way of saying vintage but attributing a decade to it is I think much easier on us vintage individuals who also buy things...
  • not anteque or vintage

    "retro"

2 x nokia mobiles from the very early 00s , listed on facebook marketplace ,
evidently I am not allowed to say

"please remember those phones are not "smart" or android , as a friend said to me , no GPS , ideal for young drug pushers or the perfect gift for your loved one in prison"

So sometime after the 1933 world's fair? Microwaves are not recent! Had a major FUD campaign against them in the 70s/80s. Were more popular before and after, yes a lot more after! But still. Probably covers most peoples idea of vintage to be a 60s item maybe?

It is rare to see anything marked specifically as microwave proof until the mid 70s probably later and under no stretch of imagination could it be considered an antique .

I've seen the same on a few antique sites as well, people trying to sell 'antique early' Chinese items clearly marked as dishwasher or microwave proof.

The other thing that's not uncommon is for overseas sellers who don't have a working knowledge of our monarchy get kings and queens wrong, and get very excited about something that mentions a later king George thinking it belongs in the 1700s.

    The 1933 world's fair?

The first prototype was in 1947. Microwave ovens use the same basic tech as radar, so there were none around in 1933.
