As long as a piece of string?!!
As far as I know, there's no legal definition. I may be wrong. At a rough guess, anything over 12 months?I can't imagine a life without cheese. (Nigel Slater)0 -
Thanks
If i play by the landlords rules will i likely be offered a tenancy renewal when mine's up ?0 -
It all depends on the landlord's circumstances. I think most would prefer the same tenant to stay as long as possible, i.e. as long as you're paying the rent and looking after the property, reporting any faults as they arise etc etc, then I would imagine most landlords would prefer you to stay. Saves them having to look for new tenants etc.
You don't have to renew the tenancy when your initial term is up, it just continues on a month-by-month basis.I can't imagine a life without cheese. (Nigel Slater)0 -
Thanks
Reason i ask is because my last property got sold to someone and I had to move out around christmas which was unexpected. However they did give two months notice0 -
Read the 'guide for landlords and tenants' at the beginning of this forum. Plenty of information on your rights and so on, that you may not be aware of. I learned a lot from it. (for example, your two months' notice was a legal requirement, not a generous landlord).
I've been renting for a long time and still learning!I can't imagine a life without cheese. (Nigel Slater)0 -
Find a landlord that has lots of properties and who are running a business not someone who is letting a property because they are working away or who can't sell their property. This gives you a better chance of finding somewhere where you can stay for a long time.0

Cakeguts: I agree but if only it were that easy. Especially if you have to go via a letting agent. We always ask for a long term let and ask as much as we can about the landlord's situation. I think the letting agents just tell you what you want to hear. For example, when we were asking about our previous rental, the letting agents assured us it was a long-term let. When we moved in and finally met the landlord, it transpired that it was being let because the owner had gone into a care home and, should she die there, then the house would be sold to raise funds for the three children. If only we'd known!
Needless to say, we moved after the initial 6 months were up. Couldn't face living there and asking "is your mother still alive?" :eek:I can't imagine a life without cheese. (Nigel Slater)0
