Please any help/advice/experience of - am really lost on this !
Never bought a car > £4k in my life. Now I have the choice of virtually any car I wish (personal circumstances). Still loathe to spend 'loads' of money as I regard a car as a convenience, depreciating asset, trouble, rusting. (Cynic ah?).
Been into 4WD offroading, now 66 and don't want to be underneath a vehicle topping up hypoid/axles. Will pay for that. Local driving, shops, 5k p.a. Comfort.Just me, no dogs/fridges. Reliability ! (it's a car). I am 6'6". Single. First thing I look for is easy of entry/exit and looks/colour. Want petrol/manual.
Looked at so many (on line), from used (£3-5k) NO ! £10-15K (why not ??) to 'new' 2018, 100m to 5000m (£2-3k 'off'). Yet new cars with dealer 'enthusiasm or carwow, seem to match this for a brand new car (long wait). I want a basic car manual/petrol/silver/grey - surely there a 00s of these waiting around somewhere. One dealer said to me 3-4 mths wait as your car will be built from the ground upwards ! What. I've built a Bobtail Rangerover quicker than that myself ! Following are all new (unless stated)..basic
Ford Kuga. Staid look No room in back. Kiddie seats. Local servicing

VW Tiguan. Nice looks. Even got a spare wheel ! Local servicing £21k new

Peugeot 3008 5k miles £21k nice enough looking

Skoda Kodiaq 2017 £21k 10k miles

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (5 yr warrenty !) 2018 10k miles 100 miles (anything wrong with a demonstrator ?)

Kia Sportage. 7 yrs warranty. Looks nice£19k

Nissan Quashai £16000 small £5k miles. boring looking/popular.

My mind says buy a Rangerover 10 yrs old, bolt a jerrycan, spade on the back, grin each time I get in it and s*d it £10k. My heart says, I am older, need something sensible, will pay the service costs, don't want hassle. From the above (fed up with looking really), choices.. what do you think/for me/you, if same circumstance. As I say, money is not really a problem (not boasting), but a car is outside in the rain, rarely used. I am a child of the 50s. I cut out coupons and buy end of date food, then congratulate myself for saving 50p.
Yes I know the answer is buy yourself what you want, but £20-25 is enough/too much.

Quandry. Thanks for looking/any replies

Have a look at a Suzuki Vitara, their older models are almost as legendary as Land Rovers with the green laners and much more reliable.

Latest ones have a much better interior and the 1.4 Boosterjet engine is a peach, it's straight out of the new Swift Sport.

You could replicate owning a 10 year old Range Rover by having your other half randomly take out £1,000 out of your bank account at no notice and flush it down the toilet. Just because its £10K to buy doesnt mean it doesnt have the £80K car bills still attached - only with 10 years of wear and tear added in.

Of that list, the Kodiaq or the KIA. You're getting a close to new car with the balance of the manufacturers warranty.

You've got to get in them & see what you think, no one can tell you what you will like. I've just been through the same sort of thing, I look at all the reviews, look at all the websites, read all the magazines, look at forums, etc. I end up with a list of cars I think are suitable then go & try them out, most of them get crossed off within minutes. Other people obviously like them though. It's very personal.

    Of those you mention:

Kuga, it's a Ford, not nice.
Tiguan, it's fine as is the Seat version.
Kodiaq, lots of space inside, I didn't like it, felt cheap & nasty.
Mitsubishi, not tried the Eclipse but had a Mitsubishi many years ago, nice car didn't last long.
Kia, limited range of options (same as Mitsubishi).
Qashqai, are you sure you'll fit in it? I don't.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Try a road test before buying anything, but add a Hyundai Tucson to your list: -
    https://www.hyundai.co.uk/new-cars/tucson

Had the 1.7 diesel auto, which I loved, had plenty of poke yet was economical. Unfortunately, had to downsize, as both missus and self had health problems, missus is 4'9", I am 5'5" and we struggled to get in and out of it. At 6'6" you will have no problem. You might also look at a Hyundai Santa Fe, although it is larger than the Tucson.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Why not have a look at the Dacia range,Been tempted myself but i am usually a £1000 to £1600 buyer but they do look tempting even the base model with wind up windows appeal to me.

I could be tempted by a Mazda CX3 or CX5.

If you want something a bit more rugged maybe a Subaru Forester?

Just get a Ford Fiesta or a Vauxhall Astra and put the seat right back.

I've just bought a new dacia duster petrol 4x4. It does seem incredibly good value and very capable.
  • As you get older, safety and stability are no doubt key concerns. I understand Freelanders survive accidents well, even allowing emergency egress through the sun roof.

Looked at a Dacia Duster. I say 'looked' because I couldn't get in it. They have rear DRUM brakes, for God's sake !
