Apologies first if this is not in the right place. Also, this may notbe applicable in the UK.
I bought a new Microsoft Surface 4 in the US in January 2018 from a Microsoft Store,, and had some problems which Microsoft Online Support dealt with (mainly software). However recently had a hardware problem, and am told I am out of Warranty. My Warranty date is shown as 17th October 2017 (date of purchase) but it was purchased in January 2018? which has been confirmed with Microsoft.
So now have an e-mail from Microsoft that tells me that when an item is shipped to a store, it is automatically registered 90 days from that date (as some people forget to register), so the Warranty runs from that date and not the purchase date? so given that my 90 days occurred in October 2017, my surface was already 3 months' old, add the next 3 months until 'i' purchased it and this makes it 6 months old, and only 9 months out of 12 months warranty left!!
Apart from the e-mail I have received from Microsoft, I can find nothing about this anywhere online!
So, a warning to check out the warranty whether bought in this country or US, and beware if you are thinking of purchasing from UK to find out if this applies here.

Does a US warranty even apply in the UK? Don't assume it does and in fact MS warranties are only valid in the country of purchase.
From their FAQ:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4036294/surface-surface-warranty-frequently-asked-questionsIs my warranty or Microsoft Complete applicable outside the country where I purchased my Surface?
> No, the Surface standard limited warranty and Microsoft Complete are applicable only in the country where you purchased your Surface.
So even if it were in date you'd not be able to make a claim from the UK, something else to consider. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yes indeed, this was very much an unplanned purchase, and I did consider the fact you mention. However, thus far I have been helped online, but even whilst in US I had to purchase a new power supply as they said it was not covered by the warranty, as it is my Warranty and purchased Extended Warranty expire in October this year, even if in the States! My post is very much a 'buyer beware' point to add to the already non observance of warranty out of country of purchase. It will, I assume cover any Microsoft item purchased, in the buyers own country, or not, we just do not know as there is no information out there. If purchased in UK will UK law supersede their 90 day Registration Policy or not?0
