No, theirs isn't a smart phone and neither is mine, thank God!
So skype etc apart, can someone suggest a cheap way of calling phone - phone, please? One-off, occasional calls.

You don't actually say, but infer that you are using a mobile.
Get an account with 1899/18866 etc.
They will give you an 0800 number that you can access their 'system' and call the USA for 2.5ppm0 -

GiffGaff is 2p/min:

If you have a landline or mobile with inclusive minutes that includes 0870 numbers, you can call USA (and many other countries) for free:

If you do not have 0870 inclusive minutes, but have unlimited minutes to 03xx numbers:

You need to top up £5, then calls are 1p per minute. You dial 0330 access number
http://www.just-dial.com/pages/cheap-calls-to-usa.aspx
You need to top up £3 or £5, then calls are 0.5p per minute - The access number is 020 7124 6666. A connection charge equal to twice the outbound rate is applied to each call, which equals 1p.
A friend sent me the above about a year ago - I use internet for my calls, but I know he has used the above companies for a few years now.
Important to satisfy yourself that calls to the access numbers will be totally free.0 -
One thing to point out is that (unlike most countries) the US does not distinguish between calls to landlines and mobiles, so the charge for calling a landline will be the same as for calling a mobile.0

There are some kind of Internet services, but I have never used a similar one.0
