How to Claim past tax refunds?

Just realised some of the medical journal subscriptions are eligible for tax exemption. Have been paying for them for past so many years but never claimed tax refund on them. I am Claiming this year but want to claim for all previous years too.
Please could anyone advise me how do I go about doing it?
I have filled the tax return for 2017-18 online and planning to submit soon.
Many thanks,
Am

You can only go back 4 years.
Did you complete Tax Returns for earlier years?
You do realise your post is on the wrong board?0 -
Thanks for your reply. I have been submitting for last 2-3 years because I started the child benefit. Before that I guess I need not have had to.
Didn't realise I posted in wrong forum. Can I move this post or delete and repost in right forum?0 -
You can currently amend your 2016:17 Self Assessment return but normally have to do it by 31 January 2019.
For previous years where you have completed a Self Assessment return then you are out of time to make an amendment so will have to claim overpayment relief.
Google it and there is information on gov.uk. It is a little trickier than amending your return, I think you have to provide quite a bit more information. Essentially you are admitting to making an incorrect return.
If any of rhe earlier years didn't involve Self Assessment then you just have to contact HMRC with the details. They will no doubt want the actual name of the organisation as they have a list to check against to make sure tax relief is due.0
