Economy 18

Someone told us that he had heard about an electricity tariff called "Economy 18". This was ideal for people whoi had electric central heating boilers, as it allowed then to have cheaper electricity duringh the day/evening when the boiler was on. Can anyone shed any light on this tariff; which suppliers offer it; does anyone use it, does it even exist?!!

I stand to be corrected but I don't believe such a tariff has ever existed.

If it did everyone would use it; even with gas CH.

Wicked, maybe we'll get an Economy 24 next (oh, I really doubt it though)

Sounds Like E10 to me. Just be wary, lots of Suppliers cannot bill this type of metering so you end up with a lot of problems and Suppliers that don't want you.

Just means you get 10 hours OP, 3 of which in the day instead of E7's full 7 hour only OP burst.

You have to way the charges up because for some people E7 works out cheaper.

Have a look through previous threads on this board. The OP on one of the last ones gave some info on his usage and why E7 worked better for him.

  • Economy 18 meters do definitely exist although I'll admit I don't know how they work or what areas of the country they are available in.

This will explain how they are used.

These were introduced in 2006 and I've never come across them in England/Scotland.

They are an addon to a normal metering setup so they could be added onto Super E12 with this Supplier. Another tariff I haven't seen either.

Are you sure that it wasn't Economy10?
You may well be correct. A neighbour has searched for the same tariff and come up with E10.

    Thanks for the reply.

No worries Sander. There are meter tariffs that are not available in England & Wales. I reckon this is the same.

Are you by any change in the East Midlands, Yorkshire, Northern Electric or Scottish Power regions? If so, it sounds like E10.

Worth noting that E10 is restricted to whether the local Meter Operator supports it. Not all do.

    Good luck

Sander, just noticed searching for something SP will do E18 for you but it's called Economy 2000. However, if you live in an area where the metering is not supported, you could not get it.

  • In case it helps anyone, we have a flat in Norwich with Economy 18 supplied by Powergen. It involves having 2 meters as the missing 6 hours are spread in 3 x 2 hour chunks during the day (in our case 7.30-9.30;16.30-18.30;22.30-0.30) but no electricity is supplied via that meter during those 6 hours. We have our underfloor heating and half of the wtaer hetaing on Economy 18.
The underfloor heating is just not on during those 6 hours which doesn't seem to cause any problems and the split boiler (half of which is heated with economy 18 and half with normal tariff - we don't generally need the non-Economy 18 half switched on). It all works reasonably well. The small disadvantage is that the heating controls (being on the same circuit) are also switched off during the 6 hours so you can't change the settings during that time.
  • Hi,

I too have one of those flats in Norwich. Angela's description is nearly correct - there's one meter, but two supplies. The meter records three different readings: rate 1, rate 2 and rate 3.

Unfortunately one of my tenants has recently changed suppliers from Powergen, which has created an almighty mess...I bet they were surprised when their bill went up !
