I have just paid £200 1yrs line rental to Plusnet on my CC as I get 0.5% cashback.
OK its only £1 but £1 is £1!

Why would any landlord accept credit card payment.
It costs money for the Landlord !
This is why many Lenders refuse to accept mortgage payments by CC.
Nice idea and tried by many people before.
Try paying for a TV licence or your car tax by CC ! Some will accept and NOT charge you but most want to charge a fee.

    No, it's a simple fact.

I've been paying my council tax on my credit card the last couple of months. I assure you, from the council's perspective I've paid! They're pretty sharp at chasing these things up...

From my perspective, I now have a debt to pay off equal to the payments made. But I owe that to the credit card company, not the council. So it's now a different bill. The previous bill (from the council) has been paid.

Paying by CC is not necessarily doing something you cannot afford, its about managing cashflow.

Lets say e.g. you working on a big project it will pay a big lump sum but only in say 4 months time when its finished, the money will be there but not now and you have stuff to pay now, you use a cc problem solved, andits paid off when the money comes.

Many entities borrow to manage cashflow, its part of every day life.

Of course this is different to using a cc when you havent got the means to pay it off, but dont assume everyone is in that situation.

I used a cc to pay a bill to my landlord start of last year as I had no debit card due to it been stolen and my landlord been very impatient not wanting to wait for it to arrive. Obviously I didnt pay the transaction fee, as I was willing to wait for the debit card to arrive.

Most councils allow you to pay your CT bill with a Mastercard or Visa, but not Amex.

You can sometimes pay with Amex if your council allows you to pay at a PayPoint, and you do it in a Co-op.

If your council accepts payment via PayPal you can use Amex.

You can pay Council Tax (and most other bills) with Amex using a service called Bill Hop, but you pay 2.95% service charge to pay this way. This can be worth it if you are trying to hit a sign up bonus.

Just to pick up on this point...

Charging people a fee for paying by credit card has been illegal for a year now (unless it's a business credit card).
From Saturday 13 January [2018] all surcharges for paying via credit or debit card will be banned – this includes payment methods linked to your card, such as PayPal or Apple Pay.
