What would happen if you made an offline payment with a card assiciated with a frozen bank account?

Say for example to pay for something on a train or somewhere else with no real time connection and therefore the payment gets processed say a few days after you made the payment?

Would the bank process the payment and demand you find money from another source to repay it, plus a very large admin fee since no money could be taken from your frozen bank account?

I don't have a bank account that's frozen thank god and wouldn't fancy trying what I said above either even if I did.

Presumably the card would be blocked if the account is frozen?
  • So it begs the question - why are you asking?
  • If by some chance your card had not been 'online' since the account was frozen and the retail environment was such that the transaction could not be sent online (or did not need to be sent online) the transaction could end up being processed and your issuer would have to decide what to do with it.

If the retailer had in fact breached the card processing rules by not going online when it was required to do so, the card issuer may have a right to charge the item back to the retailer's bank for that contravention of card acceptance rules.

If the card were to go online in a CHIP-read environment, the issuer would most likely issue a 'decline and pick up' response and remotely disable the CHIP.

Some POS devices are also able to store what are called 'exception files'. These are lists of cards not to be honoured or to be picked up when presented for payment. So, even if the transaction were not sent online, the POS device itself might have it listed in its exception file and would be able to issue the response stipulated in the exception file listing.
