MOT help

I have my MOT on saturday, think it will be ok apart from one thing.

Last year, the Z shape bit that is welded to the exhaust backbox, which is inserted into a rubber boot rusted away. As far as I can tell, it is just the hinge that rusted, there is no damage to exhaust at all.

To keep the exhaust in place, I got some strong wire, and looped that around the exhaust and around a structure on the car. It is secure as I did it loads of times, and there is a bit of movement the same as what was allowed by the "proper" fastening.

Will that be ok? I think I read somewhere that someone with a Volvo took his through multiple MOTs with the same sort of fix.

i was going to add more wire to make doubly sure it is secure, but it has been ok through many long journeys since it fell off.

It's a horrible bodge that just puts off the inevitable.

But ultimately, it's down to the tester to determine whether the exhaust is "insecure".

    6.1.2 Exhaust System

    ...
You need to assess the overall security of the exhaust system. One or more missing or defective exhaust mountings doesn't necessarily make the exhaust insecure.

Thank you, I agree it is just a bodge, but the exhaust itself is in good condition so am loath to replace just yet.

It is definitely secure, and I will double check it on Friday before I take it in. Good to know that the definition states that a missing mount does not make it insecure.

Fingers crossed for me and my wallet

I had the same happen on my exhaust, the bracket snapped off from corrosion. Took it to an exhaust fitter to get a replacement rear silencer but he said that the exhaust was in too good a condition to warrant replacing it. He welded a bolt to an exhaust clamp, put the clamp around the pipe and the bolt through the rubber bush.

Other than the main dealer flagging it up every service it passes a MOT without even an advisory.

Just to update, it passed today with one advisory which was a tyre.

And that was a free MOT from Halfords that I got when they were doing the offer last year.
