In the same position and if the other party appeared reasonable I would be getting it fixed between us without insurance company involvement.

In fact I was in that position and I did :-)

In my 30 odd year driving career I also:

    - broke my own rear light cluster while reversing - just replaced the cluster myself (again didn't involve the insurance).

    - Hit a deer - slight crack in bumper - repaired - again no insurance company.

To those who say contact insurance company for every incident no matter how small where do you draw the line? Do you call them reporting every stone chip?

    - My car got really muddy once - I just cleaned it - again no insurance involvement...
Was it really "everybody" that was Kung Fu fighting ???
  • Get a quote before deciding whether or not to go through the insurance. And remember, the cost of the repairs may not be your only loss - what about a hire car while yours is in being repaired? Etc.

When someone hit my car while it was parked and unattended, I genuinely didn't think there was much damage. In fact, as it was dark when I returned to the car, I didn't think it had been hit at all. Then I noticed a bit of trim was out of position - not damaged, just looked like it had come unclipped. Then I realised the rear wheel was at a slightly odd angle - the tyre wasn't even flat, just the whole wheel slightly pushed in at the top. No other damage, as far as I could see. Cost to repair - £6,000 (wishbone snapped, full offside rear suspension needed replacing). It's taken just over a month (should get it back today), so we're also claiming the cost of a hire car.

Never agree to settle direct with the third party until you know for sure how much it will cost.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

It sounds like to repair correctly will be a costly job, writing the car off. If you can live with the damage as is, then come to an agreement with the other driver and take some cash to cover your losses.

Like it or not you are required to report it to your current and future insurer, many would not but you should,
  • This happened to me last night. Driver reversed into my car, which I was stood next to. Drove forward, and as I ran round to inform her she had hit my car, reversed into it again, nearly hitting me, then hurled abuse out of the window and drove off at speed. Police have been informed, as I managed to get her reg.
I Hope you get things sorted.
