Abbey National mortgage PPI

Hi.
We took out a mortgage when getting married in 1994. I remember being told that I would not be accepted for the mortgage unless I took out the protection insurance. I specifically remember the phone call.
We moved house in July 2000 and switched mortgage providers. This time no protection insurance was taken. Since taking out original mortgage Abbey became Alliance & Leicester and now Santander. I started going through PPI companies but failed. I then found the procedure for PPI complaints via the Santander website and filed a complaint. They came back with "We cannot find any accounts" which was baffling. Eventually, after many letters to and fro, I visited my local branch and explained the situation. The Santander rep went onto their system and found my mortgage account number. I thought how come they couldn't find it before?. Now I had the account number I forwarded this to the complaints dept. this was also unsuccessful as they were now saying they can't find any details. I then filed a complaint via the Financial Ombudsman and at the end of it all they came back to me stating Santander cannot find any details. They were not saying that I didn't have the PPI (I am 100% sure that I did) but just saying that they cannot find the details or have destroyed them.
So, after about 3 years of trying I came to a dead end. I wish I kept the paperwork but who keeps their paperwork for over 20 years? I don't think there is anything else I can do but if anybody thinks of anything, that may help, then please reply.
Thanks.

Nope - it's over. I'm amazed they found as much as an account number.

What insurance were they referring to?
Life assurance was still mandatory in 1994.
MIG was still commonplace in 1994We moved house in July 2000 and switched mortgage providers. This time no protection insurance was taken.
By 2000, MIG and compulsory life assurance requirements were rare. Now I had the account number I forwarded this to the complaints dept. this was also unsuccessful as they were now saying they can't find any details.
Why do you think that finding the account number is of any use to you? Most MPPI is standalone monthly direct debit and not built into the debt. All the account number tells you is that a mortgage existed at some point. They were not saying that I didn't have the PPI (I am 100% sure that I did) but just saying that they cannot find the details or have destroyed them.
If you are 100% sure you did, who was the insurance company that the monthly direct debit was paid to?but who keeps their paperwork for over 20 years?
Lots of people. I personally I mine going back to 1988. Its easy with scanned copies and pdfs.I don't think there is anything else I can do
Personally, i think it is more likely you didnt have MPPI. I think its more likely you are mixing up life assurance or MIG and assuming that is MPPI. However, without evidence of anything, its a dead end.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Depending on how it was sold, it might have been mandatory to buy insurance (for example, for free advice from a broker), or even company policy to take out the insurance (are you sure it was PPI and not life insurance which was mandatory for some lenders).
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
