Renting advice needed re contract

I have signed an assured tenancy agreement( not to be confused with a shorthold assured tenancy agreement). Can I gve notice within the first 6 months without having to pay the whole of the 6 months rent ?
Something the landlord said to me when I signed made me think I would have to do this but there is no indication in the actual contract.
I cant find out much about this type of contract it seems it isnt used much.
Anyone with knowledge of this or with helpful advice welcome!
