What emulators do you use?

Options
I was looking on YouTube for a bit of memory lane videos.

The old Amstrad CPC 464. The Dizzy games, Renegade, Peter Pack Rat etc.

Made me think about looking in to playing these again on the PC as i know you can get emulators for this kind of thing. Back when i had an Amstrad the joystick was the controller. What do you guys use now? Just keyboard controls or do you have some other input device for it?

And what are you emulating? I guess some will be doing the Amstrad but many will no doubt be playing games from other machines. Just interested to see what others are using out there.

PC - STEem (Atari ST) and umpteen others.

but Android is also full of emulators - Android devices are easily powerful enough to emulate 16 bit stuff. I've played about with some of these so consider it a 'partial personal recommendation.
They work similarly to each other - you need to put the ROMS (the disk/tape/cartridge as a file) into a certain folder for each emulator. You might also need an OS/firmware file for the computer or console.
Controls - this is more difficult. You can connect a USB Mouse and Keybord to most Android devices, with a USB hub and USB A - MicroUSB adaptor, for example. Or of course, bluetooth mouse/keyboard. And again for controllers - you can connect brilliant bluetooth controllers, or tiny cheap ones in you just want to dip your feet. Can be time consuming to set up on each emulator, but way better than on screen controls of course.

    My Oldboy! Free - Gameboy

When I did foray into Emulators I used MAME.

Might have to give it another try now that you mention it.

I run AdvanceMAME on my PC. And I have a bootable USB stick containing Batocera Linux (based on Recalbox), which turns a PC into a games console. It supports loads of different emulators.

KnoppixMAME is a bootable CD/DVD image, which works pretty well too. The last release was 15 years ago, so it works well on old PCs!

Well, thanks to this post I'm now down an X-Box PC controller.

Decided to give Mame another try on the Arcade Classic Wonderboy (used to play this almost every day in the Arcade when I was a kid) ... turns out I don't have the patience I had when I was a kid, so now have a broken controller and a very scuffed wall :rotfl:
  • I use Nox Player
