Safest way to get rid of old tablet?

I've got two old tablets that I no longer use and would like to get rid of. Once is an Android device (nexus), the other a Microsoft Surface RT. I'd like to get rid of these things responsibly, to a recycling centre for instance, but I'm concerned about security and my private details etc. I've reset them both to factory settings, is that enough?

It'd be better to sell them on to someone who will use them, e.g. eBay.
Resetting to factory settings should be sufficient but if you're concerned then encrypt your Android tablet with a strong password then factory reset it again. I'm not familiar with the Microsoft device but you may be able to do the same with that.0 -
