I have just received a Mastercard contactless debit card through the post from a bank (?) called U. I had never heard of them and certainly have not tried to open an account with them. I have used their contact page to message them. There are no phone numbers and no live chat (unless you log in). I am assuming this is some kind of fraud attempt. Has anyone else had any experience of this?

U Bank is a division of National Australia Bank. Are you in the UK?
It doesn't sound like fraud, but if you have never had an account with U Bank or NAB then it must be an admin error or mistaken identity so probably worth chasing up to find out what has happened.

Is the card (and letter) in your name, or could it have been intended for a previous resident?

Check your credit files for any unexpected searches, too. Just in case.

Brilliant thank you so much. I turned the card over to look for a phone number on the other side and saw at the top it has the words 'prepaid' in tiny print. I am now wondering if it is a competition win. I phoned my own bank to check if they could see any possible fraud on my accounts that I can't see online, but they reassured me all was fine. They couldn't check the balance of this card. There is an activate & retrieve pin instruction on the account. Would I be safe to do this?

No it is definitely in my name and I have lived here for nearly twenty years.

As long as the activation URL has the padlock, I'd say you are safe. Can you share the URL so people can offer their opinion on it?

    Not NAB.........

I would say the URL looks completely safe

    BUT
    1. If you haven't applied for the card, who has, and what email and password did they use? How did they get your address?
    2. check the pricing page - - you could get charged, even for the "free" card, after 60 days

On balance, unless you want that card, I'd be tempted to just cut it up and forget about it
