Huge jump in direct debit

British Gas (am in tariff until August) tried to increase my direct debit from £28 to over £100 a month. This is in spite of me being in credit on the account by £54. Made the guy on chat change it back down. No email warning me.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

    Gas or electric?

Are you bills based on Actual or Estimated readings ? How does the reading on the bill compare with your own reading ?

It may be that BG has had a recent reading and is having to play catch up with its invoices.

Although your online a/c may show a credit of £54 it will only be the sum of DD's received plus the Cr/Db on your last bill. It doesn't include the consumption since the last bill.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Actual readings are submitted every month. It was just gas. I get billed monthly, have a monthly direct debit and have to submit monthly readings.

How did you find out of the intended change in payment amount if you were not advised?
