Driver Discrimination

I am sure many drivers would not be aware that Insurance companies discriminate against drivers of different vehicles wanting to take out an insurance policy for another class of vehicle.
I have driven accident free, not caused by me, for 45 years driving cars. I now drive a motorcycle, A class, when asked for prove of no claims discount I said I have 9 years plus for my car. Sorry sir but we do not accept it from a car it has to be from a motorcycle. Same thing happened when wanting car insurance as my old car insurance had lapsed. Sorry sir we do not accept your 5 years motorcycle no claims.
If a driver of any class of vehicle has prove of accident free driving this should be accepted by insurance companies. But they do not,
So my last insurance for a brand new Mazda6 Sport (worth £21,000 in 2008) was around £350, my new quote for an old used Ford Fiesta ( worth £1000 reg 05 plate) by Aviva was £1,500.
I have written to The Department of Transport stating that insurance companies not accepting NCD proof from a different class of vehicle is un acceptable and discrimination.
If a driver has a clean history of many years accident free then insurance companies should be forced to accept his/her NCD regardless of the class of vehicle they have driven.
Your views and personal experience of this subject would greatly be appreciated.

Why on earth did you write to the DoT?

    Anyways, it is not discrimination.

This is a joke thread surely. The same example goes for a clean license to drive normal cars to be expected to have NCB for driving lorries as well.

You need a driving test for lorries and motorcycles hence different modes of transport. Why do you expect your car NCB to be transferred? Rules are rules for a reason

Insurance companies are allowed to discriminate, otherwise everyone would pay the same premium. It's how they do business.

Someone who has driven a car for 20 years and just passed their motorcycle test may be a better motorcycle driver than someone who has never driver a car and passed their motorcycle test. But it is not the same as driving a motorcycle for 20 years. There is no way they could accept your car experience to give you a cheap quote for driving a motorcycle because you are still more likely to have an accident.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

It's not discrimination ...it's all about your recent driving experience and unless you have built up NCB on cars and motorcycles at the same time your talking !!!!!!!!.

I had the same issue when I had been car-free for over 5 years; I dont think its something that Government should be involved in.
They are private companies suject to competition.

Unfortunately the DoT do not govern/control the insurance companies, what you have done is given the staff over at DoT Towers a right old laugh, do post the reply though.

    No way is it discrimination.
  • What a strange post, and a strange thing to have done.

Of course insurance companies discriminate, which is why a 21year-old in a tuned-up corsa living in Blackbird Leys will be likely charged more than someone aged fifty in the Cotswolds in a Volvo.

    That’s only right and proper.

Where do people get the idea from that all discrimination is wrong? You use discrimination when deciding where to go on holiday, or what to eat for your dinner, the word just means basing your decision on the characteristics of the choices that you are making.
