Dissapearing transaction mystery.

Hi,

I recently purchased an item online using PayPal with my debit card being the source.

PayPal took the money for my transaction from my debit card. Initially the PayPal transaction within PayPal was showing as pending authorisation, and the same on my online bank statement with the item price taken from bank my balance as shown by my reduced available balance.

Once the transaction showed as completed on PayPal, it for some reason disappeared from my online bank statement completely, with my available balance having had the item price added back to it.

So now according to my bank and bank balance there was no such transaction and the money hasn’t left my account despite it showing as completed on PayPal and receiving a shipping notification from the item seller.

I rang my bank they told me it was a PayPal problem and to ring them. I rang PayPal and according to them they took the money from my card and paid the seller with no problems. I then contacted the seller and they told me they had also received the money with no problem.

But according to my bank balance the moneys been given back with no indication of why with the transaction completely disappeared.

Anyone ever experienced anything similar before or have any idea what’s going on? I’m pretty confused.

Thanks

Yes, I've had something similar with a high-value item (£1k+). It disappeared for around 3 working days (5 elapsed days, over a weekend) and then re-appeared.

It would appear that the authorisation was taken on your debit card and appeared in pending transactions and reduced the available balance but for unknown reasons was never submitted to your bank by paypal and has now dropped off as the authorisation has expired. It is normal that the transaction would completely disappear in such cases.
The most likely scenario is that paypal will actually get round to submitting the transaction in the next few days and it will debit from your account.
  • Shouldn’t PayPal have been able to tell me that when I rang though? According to them everything was completed on their end.

Probably not. The customer service staff are unlikely to have access to this information. All they will see is that there is nothing wrong with the transaction In any event, not your problem. Just don't spend the money!
  • Ah ok good to know. Thanks for the help.
