IKEA kitchen, will it cause major problems if I get appliances elsewhere?

Options
Hi

I'm going to IKEA on Monday to buy a Metod kitchen, have been planning it for a few weeks.

I've been looking at appliances using Which, and there seem to be better value options elsewhere.

With regards these appliances:
Oven
Cooker hood
Integrated Microwave
Dishwasher

And also potentially a kitchen sink and tap, and perhaps also cabinet lighting, I know that if I order everything from IKEA, they'll install it, and if I don't, I'll be responsible for installation.

However, so long as I know the measurements of things, has anyone here done similar, with an IKEA kitchen or perhaps from another kitchen store, and did it cause any major difficulty, aside that not everything will be installed at once?

I've fitted 6 Ikea kitchens over the years, the last two were their Metod range, using other brands of appliances, sometimes.

Oven.....most are pretty much standard size, but check dimensions, but shouldn't be a problem
Cooker hood.....unless it's to fit inside a cupboard, it will be ok.
    Integrated Microwave....again, check dimensions
Taps...pretty easy to make fit anywhere
Sinks...lots plumbers don't like the Ikea wastes and end up adapting to fit their choice of fittings

Dishwasher....Buy an Ikea branded one, as you'll see lots people had issues getting the cover panel on, even with fitting kits, there is aseperate thread on here, if you search it.

But Ikea wouldn't want to fit other companies products, I shouldn't think. So you need to find an independent installer for the entire job.

Saying that, they have reduced their prices to install, so worth getting a quote. Plus the appliances they sell are mostly Hotpoint/Whirlpool and do have fve year warranty., so not a bad deal, for peace of mind.

  • As VB says you can use many different manufacturers appliances. Just measure the opening.
  • Thanks very much for your replies, very much appreciated. I agree the warranty with IKEA appliances is pretty great, but the price and quality difference, as far as I can tell with Which? can be pretty substantial, as can the price (40% more for e.g.).

Am going to follow your advice and buy an IKEA dishwasher.

I was looking to get a cooker hood that would fit inside a cupboard, however this isn't a sticking point for me so will do some measurements over the weekend and make a decision based on those for those items.

Great tip about sinks, and am glad to hear I don't need to worry about the tap.

I'll double check other measurements, and will see if I can convince IKEA to cut the countertop or units to fit appliances or sink that they're not supplying, if not, hadn't considered asking an independent installer to build IKEA cabinets, I don't need to rush so will look some up and see if they have experience doing that.

    Thanks again
