Child Benefit application problem

I am putting in a claim for Child Benefit for my daughter after my wife left us.
The application form (Question 41) asks for the system number of the birth certificate - sounds simple.
The online notes state it is a 9 digit number at the bottom left hand side of the BC.
I have a reference number at the bottom left but it is 3 letters and 6 numbers, I tried to use this on the online form but it will not accept letters only numbers. Has anyone else ever come across this before and is this the right thing to use?

Are you sure you are entering information to the right box. The paper form has a different space depending on whether the registration was in England/Wales or Scotland and I think this is because the references are in different formats.

Yes it is the box for born in England Question 41. There are 2 numbers on the BC one in top right - 2 letters 6 numbers, the other bottom left and made up of 3 letters and 6 numbers.

I have reverted to printing off the form and completing it and I think I will just have to use the 3 letter 6 number combination and hope it is correct.
