Buy, sell and move v. sell, storage, buy

Hi,

DH and I thinking of selling up and buying in a completely different part of the country. This means we could be cash buyers and live off the equity we gain before our pensions (DH 63 - me 57). We have been thinking about it for quite a while. I would go tomorrow, DH a bit more cautious - but he is now coming round to it.

We would have two choices - either sell and buy another property simultaneously (as most people do)

Or

we could sell, put our house contents in storage and live in our motorhome for a few months until we found our perfect property.

Which do you think would be better?

Am torn if we do option 2 as it means stepping off the property ladder (albeit for a short while), and having to pay out for storage costs and pitch costs for our motorhome.

Option 1 would be the most stressful as could be caught in a chain etc., and wouldn't have the cash in our hands till the house sold.

Guess I'm looking for pros and cons of both and seeing if anyone else has done the storage option.

Having been in your position (ie, relocation) and attempting to do Option 1, then having to break chain to not lose a buyer and do Option 2.... If I did it again I would go straight to Option 2, if only to avoid the stress of being in a chain.

Option 2 would put you in a strong position as a buyer, and you could get an idea of areas while you are living in the motor home.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Just thinking some more - I think we need a permanent address for insurance etc. I guess I'm going to have to make some phone calls to bank, motorhome insurance provider etc.
