I enjoyed reading your diary
Well done on your debt free and all you've achieved so far.
Your holiday sounds exciting
I've been looking at doing more different pots for different purposes like you do. Do you is to use standard saving accounts for these across multiple banks?0 -
Hi Kaycastle thanks for popping by do you have a diary?
Everything is split between various banks and accounts, I have 3 regular savings accounts all at 5% so I am transferring the max amount each month into these from lower interest paying accounts. I have a small amount (£500) in Premium Bonds. The balances in these accounts don't relate to any particular savings pots but the total figure of all my accounts equals the total figure from my savings pot spread sheet if that makes sense. Don't know if that is the best way to explain it but at the moment it works for me. I have lots of virtual pots for savings long and short term and I sometimes borrow from myself for example when I had to buy my new phone I added a line but this was a minus figure until it has been repaid.0 -
Hi Kitty Kat, good luck with your mortgage free journey. I have lots of little pots with Nationwide. It works for me but I guess its not the best way to earn interest."Never underestimate the power of small amounts"
New Mortgage started March 17 £236,000 (28 years) NOW £231,500 Aug 19 £210,000 Dec 20 £196,629 June 21 £185,200 Now Aug 24 £1670000 -
Thanks for popping by Miss Money Magnet
Overpayments for March so far £4.06, £4.16, £4.52 & £2.30 =£15.30
Making very slow progress but it's better than nothing not sure how much i'll be able to achieve for March we've got our Iceland trip in a couple of week and I've had to buy a few new things.
I've got a new coat and some insulated trousers. Went to try some boots on yesterday but when I got there they'd sold out. I came home and tried some walking boots I was given second hand a while back but never really worn them as they were too big. Tried them on yesterday with really thick socks and I think they'll be ok for the few days we're there so one less thing to buy. Booked airport parking with 15% discount through another site rather than directly through the airport. Just need to book transfers at the other end, sort spending money out and order a waterproof phone case then pretty much sorted!0 -
Arrived back from Iceland on Tuesday has the best time, what a breathtaking place but boy is it pricey. Hard to be money saving there but did have a few drinks on happy hour if that counts. It was so worth all the spends and planning had the best time making memories
I’ve made a few more overpayments this month that I haven’t had chance to get on and record but there won’t be anymore before Sunday.
March overpayment total £87.09
Total overpayments 2019 £262.75
Amounts added to savings pots (a lot going out of these with clothes for Iceland, holiday and spending money and paid my home insurance upfront for the year and my nieces first birthday but that’s what they’re there for!)
Holiday/travel £300
Total £11.17 :rotfl:
House/DIY £80
Total £240
Xmas/Birthdays £50
Total £118.10
Clothes £30
Total £47.110 -
Had some news last week that my lodger is planning on moving out at the end of April. She has been staying at her mums quite a lot and hasn’t been around very much so it hasn’t come as a great surprise. She’s going to move back in with her mum she was living with her mum before moving in with me, I know she has been struggling a bit recently and had quite a bit of time off work and I think she just needs to be around her mum. She has said that when I move in with my OH later this year if she’s doing better and has someone to move in with she might be interested in renting the whole house. That might be a possibility will just have to wait and see what happens but not counting on anything.
She paid the last rent on Monday and will move out over the next week few I guess. Which means £350 less a month, so far with her rent up until the start of this year I have put it all towards debts. The plan after that was to boost savings and save towards travel / holiday plans for this year. In January I had to buy a new fridge freezer and in February a new iphone and it March we had Iceland so not managed to save much. Even though I have never used her money for everyday spending / bills etc I have got used to that boost in income every month. I am looking forward to having my own space back. Even though she wasn’t at mine a great deal it will be nice to spread out again as such and have use of all the fridge, cupboards, etc and just have my own things about. I love my house so much and will be really sad to not live here when I move in with OH so I’m just going to enjoy it and soak it all up for the next few months.
First OP made for April £5.87 and I’ve requested £10 payout from TCB which will be sent to the mortgage as soon as it clears.0 -
Iceland sure is pricey! We went for a long weekend on a budget, and eventually money stopped having any meaning. There was no use in converting it in your head because there was no way to get around it being expensive!
Sorry to hear about your lodger, will you find a new one?Mortgage started at £318,000 in June 2016. Original MF - 2041
2nd Property Mortgage at £275,000. Mortgage free: 2049
Total OPs: £295290 -
Hi Tropically thanks for popping in. Yes everything does cost a fortune! I opened a Monzo current account before I went and transferred all our spending money onto that. It worked really well I’d read before hand that Iceland was pretty much a cashless country and it was we managed to pay for everything by card mainly contactless. The beauty of Monzo was that it’s all linked to the app so as soon as your tap your card to pay it comes up with a notification on your phone of exactly how much you’ve paid in ISK and what that was in GBP. It was so handy we never paid a single penny in cash or even bothered withdrawing anything from the cash machine which also meant no left over change at the end as any spare ‘change’ was on the card and I just transferred it back to my usual current account. Very impressed with Monzo, very easy to open, manage, and the app is great for budgeting as it categorises your payments. I think I might eventually start using this as my spending account. Even paid for entrance for a public toilet on the golden circle trip using contactless. Was amusing to see that my quick toilet stop cost £1.20 when it pinged up on my notification.:rotfl:
No I’m not going to look for another lodger, it was never something I’d considered until she approached me and I’ll be moving in with OH at some point this year just not decided when yet so I’m just going to enjoy having my house back for a few months as I’m going to be really sad to leave my little house when I move.
TCB payout cleared so £10.32 sent to the mortgage plus a TT of £1.01 so a total of £17.20 for April so far.0 -

I do have a diary - I started it very recently
Thanks for the breakdown - I think once we create a joint account and once the remortgaging is done this year (as I'm going crazy on overpayments for LTV) I'll work these pots/savings out a bit more.
Glad you had an amazing time in Iceland! I've been eyeing up going there at some point in the next few years as everyone has lovely experiences there.Mortgage start: April 2024 - 295k Current £256k

Had a little flutter on the national on Saturday placed a few small bets ended up by £22.40 I’ve sent this to the mortgage making Aprils total so far £39.60.
Going to see a friend tomorrow which will probably mean lunch out and we’ve got a wedding do on Saturday. Hotel is already booked and paid for so just spends on the day I’ve also got to put some money towards their honeymoon fund as a gift. Will try and keep spends down this weekend as I’ve got the dentist Monday as well which will also be out of this weeks wage. It’s my boyfriends birthday next week still need to get his present and card, will be going for a meal out for his birthday and got a races trip in a couple of weeks.
Nearly booked flights to Portugal for the summer last night we ended up inviting another couple at the last minute that came with us for a few days last year so just holding off booking until we know what they’re doing. No accommodation costs when we get there just flights, spending money and taxi’s to and from the airport. Flight prices are not looking too bad so fingers crossed they don’t change much before we book.0
