Carer looking for advice

I'm a 60 year old man caring for his 89 year old mother who has COPD, severe arthritis and Lyme disease. For the last five years we've been renting a bungalow (it's a lot easier for her not having to use stairs). I've just found out that our landlord wants to sell the property when our tenancy ends in March and she's getting a bit stressed out. The rents now seem to be astronomical and there aren't many bungalows for rent in the area. Does anyone know of any help we might be able to get in this situation?

    Your tenancy doesn't end in March.


    Don't get too stressed, talk to the council once the landlord serves notice.

    First off, make sure you understand how tenancies end.


    Just because your current fixed term contract expires in March (March what date?) does not end the tenancy.


    If the LL wants you to leave, he has to serve you a S21 Notice giving 2 months notice. Has he done this?


    If not, then you can simply remain and your tenancy automatically rolls on month by month (or week by week - how often do you pay rent?).


    If he has served a S21 Notice, he still has to apply to a court to end the tenancy, and this can take time.


    Note - the above applies in England/Wales only.

    Yes, I've received the official notice. I don't really want to stay and make him get a court order because it would get me a bad name and make it harder to rent in future.

    I've asked the council if they can help, but I'm not hopeful. I think I may have to look further afield outside London, because of the lack of choice and astronomical rents here.

    An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......
  • Apart from bungalows, which are becoming even more rare these days, you could also look at renting a ground floor flat.

    As you say, looking outside of London will give you more choice and the rent will be cheaper so win/win situation.

    That may be true but there's no telling where the OP and their mother will end up!
