Wivenhoe, manningtree, thorpe, frinton. or woodbridge in suffolk
  • Dengie Peninsular? (Burnham-on-Crouch and outlying villages - a little spit of land nestled between the rivers Crouch and Blackwater). Burnham is the largest settlement on the river with Liverpool Street branchline, high school, primaries, facilities etc, lovely character buildings but still only around 6,000 people (from memory).

Villages like Southminster and Tillingham etc) are all only a few miles apart with plenty of countryside in between. Approx 15-20 minutes from Maldon and South Woodham Ferrers for larger supermarkets, and 40 minutes max to Chelmsford, Basildon, Southend, Lakeside for forays into the metropolis.

We lived in the area for many years until recently, and it was always a far cheaper area, semi-rural but without excessive travel to larger towns for extra facilities.

CM0 covers most of the Dengie on Rightmove. :-)

I live just across the Suffolk border, north of Colchester. Good rail links into Stratford and Liverpool St, but Colchester is pretty poor in terms of town amenities these days. Much quieter this side of the Suffolk border, but 20-30 mins drive to station depending on traffic. You can get a nice 3/4 bed house within walking distance of the station for £280k.

Parents live in Frinton - I don't like it personally and it's a long commute on the train. I've done 1.5hr train commutes in the past, wouldn't ever do it again.

Alresford is ok, Manningtree is expensive for what you get.

Colchester lacking town amenities? Like what? Plenty of independent shops, a market, departments stores, cafes, pubs, art galleries and museums and that is just walking along the High Street and the roads leading off it.

Let's just say we are close enough to the QE2 bridge & it's traffic chaos to make Kent a no no sadly! It's a nightmare getting across the river most of the time & we have family this side.
Hornchurch and Upminster are heading the wrong direction, but thank you!

Looking for a 3/4 bed semi. Up to £280k. I can look at Rightmove and find lots of little gems, but need insider knowledge of good and dodgy areas. There's a house I love in Great Yarmouth but never hear a good word said about the place!

I love Leigh on sea but far too busy. Thinking of maybe Walton on the Naze, maybe Frinton, Colchester, Manningtree, Alresford.

Maldon is nice, no train so price a little lower as a result but can get the train from Witham
  • My friend had a lovely place on outskirts of Chelmsford. Greater baddow? Always seemed nice.
  • Great Baddow is not very rural and is just an extension of Chelmsford. Maldon and surrounding areas are pleasant but there is a drive to a station. Also rail fares are high, parking costs at stations are high, all things to take into consideration.
Coggeshall is very pretty, but quite pricey, a 3 mile drive to nearest mainline station Kelvedon.Looking in the other direction is Tiptree, this used to be a village but a lot of building over the last few years has made it more like a small town, also a 3 mile drive to Kelvedon.
Further out still and rural are Tolleshunt D'arcy, Tollesbury and Mersea.Although house prices are cheaper in these areas, you would have a significant drive time to get to a mainline station.
