Debit Card for 16 Year Old

Options
Hi,

I have a 16 year old son who banks with Nationwide and saves regularly. He wanted to open a flex account so he could use the debit card to shop online. They can't offer a debit card at his age, only a cash card. My question is, can anyone tell me what bank would offer a debit card / current account to a 16 year old? He does work part time but he prefers his wages to be paid into his smart account and he'd transfer his spending money for his shopping online into the current account.

Thanks in advance!!!!

HSBC will give your son a debit card.

Their 'MySavings' Account also has a reasonable rate of interest - though not quite as high as the Nationwide Smart account..

  • So will Barclays (Visa Debit/Connect), NatWest (Solo - like HSBC), Lloyds TSB (Visa Debit) & Abbey (Switch/Maestro).

    All offer online banking.

alliance & leicester do also & if you credit £250 per month you get a good interest rate. not sure if you can go through quidco for this account it is the premier 21 account. bottom of the current account page http://www.alliance-leicester.co.uk/currentaccounts/index.asp?page=home
my son went with this one.

The reason I suggest HSBC is that I believe that it pays the highest interest rate for under 18 accounts that come with a debit card, then any of the other big banks. (Natwest, Lloyds, Barclays)

I wouldn't normally recommend Abbey to anyone these days, due to all the problems they have been having introducing new IT systems nor A&L (though that is based on personal experience of their service)

  • Thanks for the input. I will show my son this thread and take it from there.
