Voice mail answer phone query

Options
Does anyone know of a phone with built-in voicemail recording which, when in use, allows a third party calling in to leave a voicemail, instead of hearing a busy tone?
I realise that 1571 would do this, but it wouldn't be suitable for this particular system. It would need to be a standalone piece of hardware - with a flashing light!

I don't believe this is going to be possible because the busy signal is generated by the network when the number called is in use. All 1571 does is intercept the busy signal and sends it to voicemail.

On the phone system a number can only ever be available (to make the connection) or busy. It can't be available and busy/unavailable at the same time which is what you're after.

There should be phones available that indicate on their display if a 1571 message is waiting but otherwise the broken dial tone when you make a call is the other indicator of something waiting.

Call waiting allows a second call to be held for the user to pick up, so there must be a way to let that second call.

My mobile does what you want automatically, but I guess you are asking about a landline.

Yeah but call waiting is just that - waiting. It doesn't change the fact that the number is either in use or not so you still wouldn't be able to send it to a local voicemail off the phone network as the number is still classed as being in use.

Mobiles work differently because they could build things like this in easily when it was being designed and its all cordless and behind the scenes. Landlines, originally designed purely for voice calls and sod all else, have had to have all the various technologies tacked onto them over the years so you get various incompatibilities and things that you can do on a mobile that you can't do on landlines.

    Yes, a landline.
