Move Electric meter from Neighbours Porch to my property

Hi All,

I live in a Semi which in the early 1980's was one house, it was then split into 2 houses and nothing has changed from then. My electric meter is in my neighbour's porch and always has been, I know nothing about electricity but I am guessing the main feed comes in then splits to two meters and we both pay for our own usage, but this could be wrong.

My Neighbour had a smart meter fitted about a month back and the person who fitted it said the glass had dropped on my meter and needed to be fixed, he advised me to contact my provider who would come and see to it ( this is true its always been like it ) I have not as yet

My meter is very old and with the glass issue I assume they will fit a smart one, which brings me to my question

If I were to request they move the meter to my property, would I be charged? I have zero access issues with my neighbour and get on with him very well, to be honest, I think he would be very happy for it to be installed on my own land.

Here are a couple of pics, click to enlarge them

No one does things for free. It won't be cheap.

You may not have any issues with access, but unless those access rights exist in writing in both sets of deeds (or whatever they call them nowdays) for the 2 separate properties, issues may arise in the future. (especially if either of you attempt to sell up)

Hopefully you were advised that you were buying a half finished property split when you purchased, and made the allowance in price to complete the work that should have been done from the outset.
  • Odd that glass dropping like that .As a meter reader for 20 years I ve never seen that happen..Seen them smashed , broken inwards with the broken bit then pressed inwards to stop the rotating ring and so stop the meter..a bit of fiddle.
The usual method is to get a price from your local distributor in your area to have the meter moved .On their websites there should be link to get a quote. You need to know how far the meter is moving.
    Good advice also from Wavelets
