Tumble drier in gas meter cupboard?

Options
Hi! I need some advice. I've moved into a house with no room in the kitchen for my tumble drier. I'm keeping it in the garage but there is no power in the garage and after the quote I had to get power to the garage, there won't be power there until I've done some serious saving! Anyway, to the point - I have a large cupboard big enough for the drier, it has a window which opens for the steam release tube and a power socket right outside the cupboard door, seems ideal however, the gas meter is located inside said cupboard and I am concerned about having an electrical item next to the gas meter. The door of the cupboard will be open while in use as I need to use the power socket and it won't be plugged in when not in use. Is it safe?

Assuming there are no gas leaks then yes!

Gas meters were frequently installed in the same cupboard and the electricity meter and fuse box and indeed in rooms used for all sorts of other purposes. As far as I know there is no requirement to move them for safety reasons although new installations generally go in a box outside.

Presumably you also have a washing machine?
Perhaps think of replacing it with a washer-drier, which will avoid the tumble-drier question!

    I used to have a combined washer/dryer.
I got rid after about 12 months as it wasn't very good at doing either job properly.
They, however, improved over the last few years.

our tumble dryer is in the same cupboard as our gas meter, and has been for eight years without any problem.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

  • It sounds like a similar setup to mine. The gas & electrical utilities run underneath my path and are terminated at their meters in the cupboard under the stairs.

Our gas meter is boxed in with mdf and I think there's an air brick in there as well for ventilation. The idea being to slow down the gas in the event of a leak and force it outside.

We had our tumble dryer in the cupboard until last week. It's going back in the kitchen next to the washer as part of a refit. It just makes more sense to us and hopefully it works a bit better. We may consider getting a small chest freezer and putting in the cupboard though.
