I am just about to move into a new house & need a gas & electric provider. Would I be right in thinking the best way to pick one would be based on the lowest unit & daily standing charge as I have nothing to compare bills to? I was with eon in my old house who were great & I even got a back a credit if £100! Many thanks

Not sure from your post if you understand the rules, but if not - You must register your occcupancy and meter reads with the encumbant supplier on the day you move in

Only when this supplier has set up an account for you, are you free to start the Switch process to another supplier
  • no i know what to do about meter readings, i am asking if the best way to choose a provider is based on their standing charge & unit price or should i be looking at the deals.

You need to guess your consumption - typically 3000kwh for elec, 10000 kwh for gas.

Put these into a comparison and then choose.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • i can compare with my old bills but i wasn't sure how accruate it would be due to the size difference. i was spending around £80 per month on dual fuel but wasn't sure if that was the best this ti use as a comparison/

Don't compare with where you are - the property will be different - if brand new it will be better insulated.

S/C and unit costs show the actual cost .Estimates are just that an estimate .
If you just use the averages house size etc you should get near enough .

Then add in any discounts or kickbacks.

You already have a supplier or suppliers - the existing ones.
Once you've registered with them, you can switch if you like.

The best way to find the best option for you would be to consult a comparison site. The comparison site will assist you to estimate your consumption if you have no figures of your own.

Of course, an estimnate is not as good as an actual, so if estimated, you need to monitor your usage to esnure it matches the estimate; if not, update the estimate accordingly annd recheck you are on the best tariff.

Alternatively, the Cheap Energy Club will monitor to ensure you are on the best tariff for your assumed usage (but you will have to update the assumed usage if that changed)
