Non-FIT Solar Panel Tariff Options? (Hey, Energy Companies!)

Hey everyone!

I have an unusual situation here and hoping someone can help. I've recently purchased a property with solar panels, installed by the property developer several years back. The person who purchased the property before me, never registered for the Feed-in Tariff however, and under rules introduced in 2016, it's no longer possible to register any systems commissioned before 2016 to receive FIT payments, be it at the 'old' generous rates or the newer, less-generous rates.

As a result of this, I'm generating electricity and feeding it into the grid but not getting paid anything for this, which seems a trifle unfair. I'd like to find an option which enables me to generate some sort of income, even if it's not as generous as what I would've received under the FIT scheme.

I've noticed there are a couple of tariffs on the open market which DO pay consumers for the energy they feed back into the grid; these tariffs tend to be aimed at people who have a EV car or solar battery installed, and they pay for feeding electricity from these devices back to the grid. However, they do also state that solar panel users will be paid for any energy they export, since they have to opt-out from receiving FIT 'export' payments, in order to sign up for these special tariffs.

I've noticed that Octopus and OVO Energy both have tariffs based around EV and solar batteries, and I wondered if either of these can be signed up for if you DON'T have an EV car and/or solar battery? Do the tariffs actually require that you have either of these devices? Or can you sign up without either of these, and still receive payments for the solar energy you export?

It'd be nice to think that I could get something, at least, from these panels, other than the free electricity during the day; I work during the day all week, so I don't really have much opportunity to 'use' that free electricity. I'm happy to provide the energy to the grid, but I think it's only right, since they're taking and selling that energy on, to receive something for it myself.

Can anyone, perhaps from OVO or Octopus confirm either way what's possible here? Are there any other options I may have missed? Anyone else in a similar situation or been in a similar situation and found a way to benefit from the electricity they generate outside of FIT?

Many thanks!

I have never understood how the rule you mention can be enforced - if never registered simply register them quickly for what remains of the FIT scheme.

Find a suitably compliant MCS accredited installer and go from there. I suspect for a modest sum they will be happy to carry out the required checks and certificates and off you toddle.

    Simples.

    Simples.

So the MCS accredited installer has to claim that they installed and commissioned the PV system (recently)?

How do you suggest getting around the date that the DNO was informed, assuming the installer did this within the 28days (I think) required?

In a word yes. Who will check - OFGEM? Never happen.
I assumed this was a 3.6Kw capped system - preapproved so just let them know.

Besides most MCS accredited outfits will be wondering whether the accreditaion is worth a carrot very soon if not already.

As I said this really is very resolvable.

Yes, the 28days after install rule, that's why I asked how you get around the earlier notification date in your 'easy' solution?

The OP believes it was never registered? Has it been?

Where does it say it wasn't registered with the DNO?

Why would a leccy firm risk their accreditation/licencing by not registering the install with the DNO as they are required to do?

Where does it say it was?

On face value the OP says it was unregistered - on face value its all quite simple. If however it has been partially registered then my cunning plan might be a struggle.

OP find out the answer to this and all will be clear.

Martyn - wind your neck in.

Please don't be rude. You stated that your 'solution' was simple, and I've asked how you get around the DNO issue.

If your advice is misleading, then I think that should be pointed out so mistakes are not made based on your 'advice'.

What evidence does the OP provide along with his FIT application that he is the owner of the solar array? Normally, they expect confirmation of payment in full (ie; a receipt). Confirmation of the property purchase will presumably be dated back to the date of legal completion.

I see that there are reports in the Press today that the Government is consulting on a new export payments scheme. Might be worth waiting imho.

Given that Martyn is raising realistic and practical concerns with your proposal, this comment is bang out of order.

Give that your 'advice' is totally unethical and clearly against the intended aims of the rules, I'd suggest your entire contribution to this discussion is completely out of order too.

What would be useful is if contributors could offer views and experiences on export tariffs, as the OP requested!
