Hello,
I currently live with my parent in a council property and they do not work. However I work full time and expected by the council to pay all the rent and council tax for both of us. Can someone confirm if this is correct? Or how to look into this further
Many Thanks

Unless you are also a joint tenant then you have no personal liability for the rent or council tax - what will happen is that any Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit in payment will take in to account your income and be reduced (usually) on the basis of a notional contribution they deem you should be making to the household. This doesn't however alter the fact that your parents remain responsible for payment (unless you're also joint tenant).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
