I noticed this issue when I was setting up a new current account for mum and dad. Dad has dementia and so mum manages the account. They have an email address that has both of their names on but only mum is able to use it. Yet it would not let me proceed with the application until I provided an email address for dad!

It's probably only when an account is being opened by telephone or in branch that NatWest will now (allegedly) waive the requirement for an email address. As I said in my last post, it's unlikely that anyone able to open an account online would not have an email address, so providing one shouldn't normally be an issue for online applications.

You might find that you could have used the same email address for both your mum and your dad. I've done that in the past for myself and the present Mrs Razoo :)

Try logging in as your dad and changing his email address to the same as your mum's.

Tried that and it wouldn’t let me proceed- it said ‘separate email addresses are required for each customer’

So NatWest will let your parents have a joint account, but not a joint email address!

I assume that is was only during the online account application that you were asked to provide dissimilar email addresses before you could proceed.

If you log in and try editing your dad's email address now that you have the account up and running, it's just possible that the account software won't now reject the use of the same email address. It's probably worth a try.

IIRC, it's my Santander and Halifax joint current accounts where Mrs Razoo and I both use the same email address.
