1m+ overpaid for their driving licence in past three years - MSE News

With nonsense headlines like this, I really don't trust MSE anymore.0

Why have MSE wasted taxpayers money putting in an FOI to get the figures to put in this stupid story?0

Actually Online cost me more, changing an address should be free but when doing it online they charged me for £14 for changing my photo and address, when my photo on my driving licence is the same as my passport, when I phoned DVLA to complain I was told tough luck and send a email to GOV/complaints which didn't do diddly swat, if I had done it by paper It would have only cost the price of a stamp.
Changing the photo always costs money, whether online or post. Changing only the address is free.0 -

I didn't need the photo changing but it automatically adds the charge when changing address online, Id paid for it before I realised that I shouldn't have be charged, it must be a glitch on the website.0 -

My old driving licence was issued at age 16. Passport at age 17.
Renewed driving licence at 26.
Doing it online, they'd use my passport photo of when I was 17. Which meant I've have a 19 year old photo when I'm 36.
Paid the extra couple of quid to apply by post and get a new photo.
When I did it yesterday there was an option to not put the passport number in, I am not sure what happens if you don't as my photo was done this year but it does seem to be an option.Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Nice to see that MSE appears to have quiety taken some of the above comments onboard, and today changed the title of this article from
'1m+ overpaid for their driving licence in past three years'
to
'1m+ drivers could have paid less for their licence in past three years'

I thought you needed to change the photo every 10 years anyway, i.e. it's the age of the photo that sets the expiration date, not when you apply.
So if you renewed your driving license with your passport photo taken when you were 17 then it would only be valid until you were 27. At least that was what I was told when I applied for my first photo driving license0 -

No, the licence stays valid for 10 years with the old passport photo.0 -
Just keep your old paper licence and it costs nothing.0
