But then you would be missing out on the carriage clock. In the 90s I would apply for ISP signup packs to get free floppy discs. The fun stopped when they moved to CDROM.
No, the fun just transferred to gardeners who had a free source of bird scarers. ;)

Did they come with the write-protect tab physically removed, so you had to stick a bit of masking tape over the hole?

Well remembered. I still had plenty of those thick black glossy write protect labels for the 5.25" floppies.

This is one way to make a Bitcoin scam thread more interesting.

My deteriorating memory is telling me it was the other way round wasnt it? tab missing read/write, tab/sticky label over read only.

I got hold of bucket loads of 3.5" discs when the company i worked for at the time u!!!!ued the software they sent out and it was cheaper to scrap the old issue.

When the slide switch is positioned so you can see a hole through the case, the disk cannot be written on

That was how it was for 5.25"... which were a little before my time :)

Then for 3.5", an open hole was read-only, closed hole was read-write.

If you want to protect a disk from accidental loss of data, cover this notch with a strip of tape.

Pah! - you youngsters with your 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppies

nothing flew across a computer room (and potentially took an eye out) like a well thrown 8 inch floppy!

I don't know. Kids these days. Just try throwing a stack of punched cards around. You'll soon have to put them back in the correct order.
