I've been using my old Humax box (9150) with an old TV, and have now bought a digital one. I've connected it up through the scart but I'm very disappointed with the picture quality. If I buy a newer Humax (HDR-FOX T2) will I be able to benefit from the better screen?

What TV did you buy? Sounds like the old Humax only outputs SD resolution whereas the new TV is HD (1920 x 1080) or even UHD (3840 x 2160) ... the picture quality will depend on how well the TV "upscales" the SCART input.

You will benefit from the HDR Fox T2 as it can display and record HD and connect to the TV with a HDMI lead.

They both date from 2011 / 2012 so not really newer, just the FOX T2 is HD. There are newer Freeview HD recorders from Humax.

I bought a Blaupunkt 40/138. The size of the screen was (and is) more important that having an absolutely superb picture but I'm sure it's not as good as it should be, as so many others in their reviews say that the picture is really good. The specs say screen resolution 1920x1080.

Thanks everybody. I thought it might have something to do with the HD bit that's missing from the Humax. (And ditch the scart)?

    Without a doubt.

The most misjudged and poorly designed interface connection ever built.

HD should improve the picture on HD channels but remember there are only about thirteen HD channels on Freeview, so the rest will still be the same or similar as now. The TV will also have an effect.

Well it was a French design!

But it gave RGB signals to a wider audience than before, a big improvement over composite video where applicable, as component video never really took off in Europe.

Except most people didn't know to turn on RGB, they just sat their watching crappy composite pictures over SCART.

OP: Have you checked the Humax menu to see if you can turn on RGB?
I would definitely recommend upgrading to an HDMI box :)
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Bit like they still watch the SD version of a HD channels on their HD or UHD TV, then.
