How long to wait for a 'lost parcel' refund

I posted off an item, 2nd class on New Year's Eve to a UK address. I was informed that I had missed the last collection, so it would only be collected from the PO on 2nd January.
Today the buyer has sent me a message asking about it.
He has been very polite and I too replied in a polite manner stating that the Christmas backlog may be the problem and asked that he wait another couple of days to see if it arrives.
How long should I wait until just offering a refund ?
thank you

Yes, check your post office receipt for the number, it's not tracked through its journey but will update when delivered.0

I never knew that .. just checked the other item posted at the same time, which was a small parcel. That was delivered on Saturday0 -

Shame, nice as buyers may be most non-receipt claims are dishonest.
Advise buyer to open a case for non-receipt, confirm delivery address in message field when opening it and then refund.
Maybe ask them to give it a few more days before doing this in case they are genuine (genuine or not very few people will repay if delivered after being refunded).
As above buyer may be genuine so remain polite and helpful
