website help

I am a person with no knowledge of web developing. We have a small sports club and I have done a web site on my computer using Namo webeditor software that came with the strato easyweb package. I learned a bit about web developing by doing this.
With the strato easy web package I have a
domain name registered to me.
2gb web space.
20 sub domains
dns management
domain redirection
ftp access
webftp
15gb webtraffic
plus several other features.

What i have done sofar is
a web page with link buttons. these buttons are linked to appropriate files in html format.
Using smartftp programme I uploaded all my files to the webspace. I can see those files when i logged in.
I redirect the domain to the file which contain the main webpage of the site.
Due to some reason which I don't know when I type the name of the website on the IE it says
Not Found

The requested URL / was not found on this server.
I don't know what the problem is!!
Can some one please help me.
Can you please tell me whether there is anything wrong I have done.
can some one please tell me of a good easy to understand free tutorial or ebook of webdevelopment.
Thanks very much indeed.
Sorry for the long post

    Hi alositha

    I have some questions -

Did your main page definitely upload without any problems?

How are you typing the address?

Are you typing it as an absolute name such as 'http://www.etc.com' or simply 'www.etc.com'?

Also, most servers require the first page of your site to be called index.htm so if you have it called something different then there may be problems. I would recommend that you check and rename your first page to index.htm to begin with if it is not this already.

If the main page is correct, then the problem could be with the software used to generate the site.

Without seeing the site, and it would be difficult to post the url on this forum as I don't think you are allowed to, its hard for me to see what the problem could be.

I think I've sussed it. Will put in a post shortly but a good site for learning the code in a webpage is echoecho.com - Will be back in a minute with some details for you....

    Okay Nuwan -

what is happening is that your software has linked to the different pages on the computer that you have designed the website on, and not the server that you need to upload to, or more importantly should upload your individual pages too.

For instance here is one of the 'tags' which is the code used to display your buttons that refer to the individual page links

    a href="Documents/LatestNews/LatestNews.htm"

This is an anchor link that takes you to the latest news page on your site but doesn't work currently. You need to link it via the directory on the server you have uploaded to. For instance it may need to be renamed to:
    href="www.chempathcc.co.uk/LatestNews.htm

You need to do this in the source page code of the page that you upload to the server. Your software may be able to change this link for you but you need to point it at the server and not your home computer.

You also need to upload your images for your buttons and as you are linking to a folder called 'images' you will need to create the same 'images' folder on the server where your site is being hosted.

See how you get on with this. It is going to be difficult to explain it all remotely rather than show you but hopefully in time it should all click into place. Let me know how you get on. Good luck

Thanks very much both of you for the info.
What I thought was when I upload all the files (RE website) in my computer to the server, as it worked on there, that i would not have anyproblem. but it does not seem the case.
echoecho site is very easy to understand so far. I haven't had a good look on the other site yet. I am starting to understand bit deeper now. I know it is difficult to be a distant teacher for this type of things. I will come back when i am stuck.
    thank you

  • The images aren't appearing because the web site on your local computer is looking for them in your 'My Pictures/websitephotos' folder and this folder isn't uploaded to the remote site because it isn't in the root folder of the web site. Whilst the images will display correctly on your local web site, they are missing on the remote site.

To fix this you need to move (or copy) the websitephotos folder to the root folder of your local web site, e.g. My Documents/website. This would then contain:

    index.html - the home page
    websitephotos
    other.html
    otherfolders

If you move the folder within the web editor, it should automatically correct the links.

Links and images on the local site should always reference files in the root folder or subfolders so that when you upload the local web site to the remote host all the files are uploaded and correctly linked.
