All very good suggestions but it depends on the event. My sister is running the Spine Challenger this weekend and has to have a kit check the day before. If you don't have a suitable GPS they won't even let you start the race.
I can see the use as a backup to a map but I suppose it's a sign of the times that requiring technology (which can break, lose signal, lose charge etc etc) as your kit rather than a map backup is now mandatory.Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
