Christmas Lights

Options
The house almost opposite ours has an extensive set of lights on thier lawn and front of their house, these start flashing away late afternoon and are extinguished around midnight save for Christmas Eve

I understand yesterday was the twelfth night of Christmas - when would it be polite to share this observation with them?

You are being premature if they are catholics.

The 12 days of Christmas begin on Christmas Day; the period before that is known as Advent, the time of preparation for Christmas. The 12 days of Christmas end on Epiphany, the day that the three wise men came to pay homage to the child Jesus.

Traditionally, Catholics do not take down their Christmas trees and holiday decorations until January 7, the day after Epiphany.

There are those who think Xmas goes on for 40 days.

Before saying anything to your esteemed neighbour, think, do you want to have to declare a dispute if you try to sell?

    Ah, the spirit of Xmas

Clearly that must be the case then, first result on google was from the Daily Express IIRC
  • Mine came down today, the 6th is the 12th day of Christmas when drummers are still drumming, lords still a-leaping and the partridge is still comfy in the pear tree! In Spain and some other countries the kids only got their presents today, bought by the three kings!

If the flashing bothers you knock on and ask if they can switch to the steady on setting.

    This would be the worry

Although my post was mostly tongue in cheek, it would be nice if they were switched off now

I’m sure they’ll stop tomorrow. One house on my street leaves some lights up all year but they only turn them on at Christmas, suppose it’s to save the effort/risk of going up a ladder twice a year just for decorations!

17th Jan is "Old Twelvey" here in Herefordshire, the traditional night for Wassailing - it goes back to the Gregorian calendar, pre-1752.
