How much should blinds for windows cost?

I’ve recently moved in to a property. I need to get blinds for the two bedrooms. I don’t have a massive amount of money so trying to find a good price. In the main bedroom there are 4 windows which are together in a bay window shape. Hillarys blinds have quoted £600 which seems a lot and not really something I can afford. What options do I have? I wouldn’t be able to put them up myself because I don’t have a clue about things like that. I’m living in London so I know it will be pricey but surely £600 is a bit much. Thanks for any advice.

  • There are plenty of online suppliers, e.g. https://www.247blinds.co.uk/ who I have used in the past, but there are many others. You could measure up, see what the online price is and figure out how it compares with the quote you have - obviously the online places are supply only, fitting would be down to you (and bays are more difficult than standard windows).

You could also try John Lewis, but they tend to be premium product and premium prices. Might be better if you have a friend or relative willing to help with fitting so you can buy online.

You won't get any bargains from Hilary's

There are plenty of sellers of blinds made to measure on Ebay

I fitted some blinds for someone and the end cost including purchase of the blinds and my labour was about 20% of what they'd have paid Hilary's

This is a particular area where there is scope to save a lot of money in my experience

Online supplier sites will have instructions on both how to measure and how to fit. They will also send you free samples so you know what you're ordering. I've ordered my blinds from blinds 2go and not had any problems, I fitted them myself. To save even more wait for bank holidays as they tend to have 10% off.

web-blinds.com is Hillary's cheaper DIY store, if you really don't want to do it yourself look for local blind shops, there are plenty about.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • We used blinds2go for the kitchen and bathroom blinds.

Does it have to be blinds? Voiles are very cheap and will give you a bit of privacy while still letting light into the room. The net rails you need for hanging them are next to nothing (about £5 for the longest), and are extendable so extremely easy to fit.

You can get perfectly nice wooden Venetian blinds for £10 - £30, which you can then trim down to fit if the standard sizes aren't right or if they need to fit inside the window opening. If you take your time and put some masking tape around the top and blind strips when cutting them, you can get a nice result very cheaply.

As soon as you get someone in to do that then the labour costs soon add up, perhaps you could try fitting one to a single window in one room, to learn a few skills and see how you get on?

Thought of vertical blinds from Argos? cut to your own length and cut headers to length too.
