That being said, if your router is dual band, disable the 5Ghz band. 5Ghz is normally faster and less crowded than the 2.4, but it has a reduced range.0
-
This sounds daft to me. When you can't get a 5GHz signal the router will switch to a 2.4GHz signal so you can use the faster less congested frequencies when possible (close to the router) and you still get to use the 2.4 GHz frequencies if you need them.
What happens is that the client can decide to stick to a network, even if the signal is only 5% (it depends on the threshold it works with), so even if the 2.4 network is there, the client simply ignores it until the network it's connected to (the 5Ghz) is completely out of range.
And this doesn't seem to be the case, since OP said that it 'disconnects frequently', meaning that the signal is still there.
Also, some routers have separate SSID for 2.4 and 5, so it really depends on the setup.0 -
One more question..
The Sky Q router has 30mb download at the router. In the upstairs bedroom it has between 1 and 2 bars signal giving 18mb download at the xbox. This is using the 2.4Ghz as the 5Ghz will not reach.
If i was to purchase the ASUS RT-AC3200 would this give a stronger signal and give a faster download upstairs?

As mentioned before, your best bet is to move the router closer or to use powerline adaptors.0 -
Unlikely, if you put it the same place as the Sky one. More antennas usually mean more simultaneous streams rather than stronger signal.
As mentioned before, your best bet is to move the router closer or to use powerline adaptors.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy0 -

Another vote for a mesh system. Not cheap, but drop outs are a thing of the past for us.0 -

If you are willing to spend the money, by all means.
EDIT: Actually, just noticed that OP was mentioning the download speed of 30Mbps that reduces to 18Mbps.
If you are really concerned about the speed, WiFi mesh topology has its disadvantages. Basically, before the signal reaches your device, it has to be repeated X times, from one node to the other, and each time it gets repeated, it degrades. So, if you can put a single Wireless access point directly connected to the main router, that gives you the maximum speed you can get.0 -
Well, of course, but powerline adaptors are a fraction of the price.

debitcardmayhem wrote: »yes but where do you put the access point, at the end of powerline adaptor perhaps? The best option of course is wired ethernet all round
Some Powerline adaptors come with an integrated WiFi Access Point. This is a TP-Link model but there are of course other brands and other price levels: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA4220KIT-Powerline-Broadband-Configuration-UK/dp/B01LXOZ4EN0 -
Thank you for all the help. Slightly worried about increased ping and lag with the powerline adaptors / repeaters. Dont like getting shot on COD. Think thats what i will try next though0
