Cheque Lodged Going Missing

Hi All,
I lodged a cheque with my bank five working days ago, I have a receipt to prove that is been lodged, however there is no record of it. I would have expected it to be visible on my account (even though more time is needed for it to clear). Having contacted the bank they advised that they cannot find the cheque nor can they get through to the bank where I lodged it. Their process is apparently mailing all cheques to a central location and there is a possibility my cheque has been delayed somewhere. I was supposed to receive a response today but it did not materialise. Am I wrong in thinking that once a cheque is lodged it should appear on the account even if it has not cleared? Also what should I expect next?
Thanks in advance

It would depend on the banks processes but at the moment many cheques are still sent daily to a sorting centre. A cheque image can be recorded at the point you pay it in (often making life easier for the cashier or enabling self-service cheque deposit) which would also act as your proof of deposit, and as eminently sensible as this is I suppose there's no reason a bank would be obliged to provide this. Yes, a cheque will often immediately appear on the statement despite not being cleared, causing a temporary difference between statement balance and available balance.
Give it time, and if the cheque has gone missing complain; there's a fair chance you may get a refund.
Can I ask what the approximate value of the cheque was, and did you get a receipt when you deposited it?: )0 -

Indeed, but if the cheque is irretreviably lost then the only option is to get a new one written. There might eventually be a small amount of compensation available from the bank that lost it.0 -
All of the clearers send the cheques to a central agency who process the lot. From memory it’s in Northampton.
Your bank may well have a digital copy of the cheque that they can present on your behalf if they are unable to locate the original.0 -
I used the Lloyds cheque scanning facility (in App). 1 worked and 1 didn't although there was a record of both on statement and obviously I still had the physical cheque.
I phoned up. They use an external company to do them. So they phone them up and I was advised of the 15 minute call wait time.
I'll find out in upto 15-20 days if its been sorted0 -
Is this a compo cheque related to your ongoing saga?
You don't have a lot of luck do you.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0
