    Yeah i've been checking that area on a couple different property websites.

    That really really depends on the area. In some places ex council houses are desirable because their location is now trendy or up and coming. In lots of places the former estates are entirely privately owned.

    Of course, those houses are then not much cheaper than any other locally.


    Agreed. You can find both really rough areas with council houses and also really nice areas, the price differences reflect that. Some I seen were £40k in rough, £150k in nice for similar property types: 3/4 bedroom & garden.

    Heaven forbid.

    My parents bought the house they live in now as their first house 35 years ago (3-bed semi, nice rural location, big garden and driveway) with a 25 year mortgage. They have been teachers their whole lives so not particularly wealthy.

    They have done a lot of work over the years, but it was never a dump and they have never had to extend or do any serious structural work.

    I'm sure they can't be the only ones.
